ARCH NEUROSURGERY SERVICES
Traumatic brain injury is divided into three categories mainly based on the length of loss of consciousness or the presenting Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Concussion is defined as a mild brain injury in which the patient either does not experience more than a brief loss of consciousness or has a GCS of 13-15. Furthermore, CT and MRI scans of the brain are typically normal. This implies that there is diffuse damage and dysfunction of the nerve cells at the microscopic level. This diffuse damage leads to a myriad of symptoms including but not limited to headaches, memory deficits, difficulty in focusing or concentrating, dizziness or vertigo, fatigue, irritability, insomnia, personality changes, anxiety, depression, and reduced tolerance to stress. Very commonly, they are not the same person they used to be and cannot perform functions in the same way as before injury. These dysfunctions only add to their stress and anxiety which causes worsening of their symptoms.
Closed Head Injury/ Concussion
He utilizes the latest testing which is also used by NFL, NHL, and MLS to properly diagnose concussions. The tests include a thorough neurological evaluation including SCAT (Sports Concussion Assessment Tool) and VOMS (Vestibular-Ocular-Motor Testing). Dr. Yazdi then formulates an individualized treatment plan. This includes working closely with cognitive, vestibular, and physical therapists as well as providing proper medications, injections, and even relaxation techniques in order to maximize recovery and function.
Spine Pain Management
Spine related pain is the leading cause of disability and missed work. Dr. Yazdi performs a thorough evaluation and also utilizes the latest modalities to make the proper diagnosis. These diagnoses could include but are not limited to:
- Disc herniation
- Stenosis (narrowing),
- Degenerative disc disease,
- Facet arthropathy,
- Spondylolisthesis (bone slipping off bone),
- Spine fractures
Dr. Yazdi will then formulate an individualized treatment plan. It has been his experience that a significant majority of patients will improve with nonsurgical management. Therefore, he works closely with physical therapists and chiropractors. He prescribes proper medications and administers the necessary injections to relieve pain.
Those injections include:
- trigger point injections,
- cervical and lumbar epidural steroid injections,
- facet blocks,
- medial branch blocks,
- radiofrequency ablations,
- piriformis injections, and
- sacroiliac joint injections.
Our goal is to alleviate your pain and help you regain your functionality.
