Approximately 7 million people are living in the US with dementia. Each year, an additional 500,000 people are diagnosed with it. Although there are different types of dementia, most share the same basic pathology: loss of nerve cells and their synaptic connections.
Hallmarks of dementia are:
- Memory loss
- Disorientation
- Speech disorders such as difficulty finding the correct words and incorrect word
- substitution
- Impaired executive function such as managing finances or performing complex
- daily tasks
- Mood fluctuations including anxiety and depression
- Personality changes
